New RTÉ director-general plans visit to Limerick office after being 'appalled by recent events'

Director-General of RTÉ, Kevin Bakhurst

IN THE interest of being "visible and available," the newest RTÉ Director-General, Kevin Bakhurst has already started scheduling meetings with teams across the organisation, including a visit to RTÉ's studios in Limerick.

With no offical date set for his Limerick visit, Mr Bakhurst has said it will take place "soon" and added: "I have heard many of your concerns already and I will continue to listen to what you have to say."

In an official statement, the newly appointed director-general expressed his honor at joining the organisation during these challenging times, and emphasised the need to regain the public's trust and rebuild the organisation from within.

With plans to work closely with Siún Ní Raghallaigh and the RTÉ Board to instill trust in both the internal and external perceptions of RTÉ, Mr Bakhurst has recognised the disappointment and anger felt by the dedicated employees, and assured them that their concerns would be heard and taken seriously.

In a statement, Mr Bakurst said: "Change will be essential if we are to rebuild trust in public service broadcasting in Ireland and in RTÉ." Committing to doing so, the director-general announced the standing down of the Executive Board and the establishment of a temporary interim leadership team. This team will strictly adhere to "revised and rigorous governance processes and procedures, to being accountable and to delivering a public service to be proud of."

In line with his commitment to openness and transparency, he announced the expedited establishment of a Register of Interests for staff and contractors. RTÉ's Freedom of Information Officer will lead this process, ensuring compliance with legal obligations while learning from best practices in the civil service and international broadcasters. He also emphasised the urgency of addressing potential breaches of RTÉ's journalism and content guidelines.

Furthermore, Mr Bakhurst recognised the need for cultural change within RTÉ. He stressed the importance of focusing on the well-being of employees and serving the public effectively. To achieve this, a comprehensive review of roles, grades, pay, and gender equality will take place. He also plans to improve communication channels and involve employees in decision-making through the establishment of a staff consultation group and a comprehensive employee survey.

Having highlighted the importance of accountability to the public and the media, he pledged to be open and available to the media, sharing the progress made by RTÉ in implementing necessary changes.

In addition, he emphasised the importance of engaging with external stakeholders, including the independent sector, as decisions made by RTÉ have wider implications for the media industry as a whole.
