Consultations over power station on Limerick/Kerry border begin

Tarbert Power Station to wind down

Tarbert Power Station located on the Shannon Estuary

THE PEOPLE of Limerick are being asked to give their views on the proposed Tarbert Next Generation Power Station at a series of consultation events held this month.

The consultation events, hosted by SSE Thermal, a leading provider of flexible power generation in Ireland allow members of the public to have their say on a new power plant at the existing Tarbert site.

An online consultation opens on July 10, while in-person events take place at the Tarbert Community Centre and the Listowel Arms Hotel on Tuesday, July 18 and Wednesday, 19.

SSE Thermal is setting out plans for a new power station at the Tarbert site. The plant would run on 100% sustainable biofuels, namely hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) produced from waste oils to create a fossil-free alternative to diesel, to keep in line with European Union sustainability standards.

The station could also potentially convert to hydrogen in the future, further supporting Ireland’s net zero ambitions. The existing Tarbert Power Station is due to close by the end of this year, in alignment with environmental requirements.

Conor Joy, community liaison officer for SSE Thermal, said: “Our consultation events are a great opportunity for members of the public to learn more about our proposed station, give feedback and ask questions of the project team.”
