Developer seeks to add more apartments at former Limerick bank

The former Permanent TSB branch in Sarsfield Street

DEVELOPERS have sought permission to increase the number of apartments they want to build in a former city centre bank building.

Huntswold Ventures had secured the green light from Limerick City and County Council to convert the old Permanent TSB branch in Sarsfield Street to a shop at ground floor level with five apartments overhead the protected structure.

Now, the developer has applied for permission to add four new apartments to the project, with a decision due on the application next month.

At present, the second floor contains office space.

But if the application is approved, it will mean there will be nine apartments in total on the site, located at the corner of Sarsfield Street and Liddy Street, with the second floor extended to accommodate the living spaces.

It’s the second time the developer has sought to increase the number of homes it has planned for the site.

Initially, they applied to build four apartments, then five, with nine the latest projection.

The site has been out of use since Permanent TSB opened a new branch at 131 O’Connell Street, while closing its branches in Sarsfield Street and William Street.

Built around 1890, Permanent TSB had operated in 24 Sarsfield Street between 1995 and 2015.

Prior to that, the unit was home to Martin’s Bakery.
