IN it’s eighth year, Team Limerick Clean Up (TLC), has seen a growth in popularity as even more people took part in the Good Friday initiative.
Seen as Ireland’s largest one-day clean up event, this year saw over 21,500 participants and an increase of schools and businesses getting involved.
Speaking ahead of the event, rugby legend Paul O’Connell said: "Slowly but surely we're addressing it by doing the cleanup, but also addressing it by giving people and giving kids the right habits around litter”.
Volunteers could be seen all across Limerick donning high-vis vests and rubbish bags as they tidied the roads, villages and city.
GAA clubs, voluntary organisations, rugby clubs, neighbours and friends all gathered from early morning to clean followed by tea and treats.
The annual event saw co-founder JP McManus and Paul O’Connell visit different areas and meeting points of TLC last week.
“It's just two things to it, the city and county gets a bit of a cleanup on Good Friday but also kids learn the right habits around cleaning and tidying their local area and having a bit of pride in place and learn a little about littering and not littering and taking a little bit of responsibility for that,” Paul said.
Since beginning in 2015, TLC has seen over 400 tonnes of rubbish gathered by the people of Limerick.
