Mayor of Limerick opens book of condolence following earthquakes in Turkey and Syria

LIMERICK City and County Council (LCCC) have opened a book of condolences for the people of Turkey and the people of Syria, impacted by the recent devastating earthquakes.

Mayor of the city and county of Limerick Cllr Francis Foley opened the book of condolence in Council Headquarters located at Merchant’s Quay in the city.

The people of Turkey and Syria were struck by an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.8 in the early hours of Monday, February 6.

Over 20,000 people have been confirmed dead following the devastating earthquake as buildings across Turkey and Syria collapsed following the initial earthquake and aftershocks

The mayor is inviting people to call in, or by logging online here and signing the book of condolence in memory of those who lost their lives.

Mayor Francis Foley said: “On behalf of the people of Limerick city and county, I wish to express our condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in the earthquakes.



“Our thoughts are also with those injured and hope they will recover from their injuries. While we also offer our support to those people from both Türkiye and Syria who call Limerick their home,” Mayor Foley added.

In addition to the Book of Condolence in Merchant’s Quay, there is another book open in the Dooradoyle Council Offices.

All books will remain open until 9.30am on Friday, February 17, 2023
