Council grants planning for €20m nursing home in Limerick

Renders from Demesne Architects of the nursing home

PLANS to develop a 91-bedroom nursing home and 32 independent living bungalows in Croom have received the green light from local authority  planners.

The applicant – Croom Lodge Nursing Home & Village Ltd – received planning permission last week for the €20m project. It is to be situated at Skagh, Croom – a greenfield site on the outskirts of the village close to Croom Orthopaedic Hospital, Croom Primary Health Centre and the Coláiste Chiarain campus.

The company behind the planned development is Hibernia Senior Living Group, which has been involved care sector related transactions totalling more  than €350m.

A spokesperson for the group told the Limerick Leader it is delighted with the notification of intention to grant permission for a state-of-the-art 91-bed nursing home, amenity spaces and “a much-needed independent living community with 32 bungalows”.

The spokesperson added: “The completed complex with a gross development value in the region of €20m is ideally located just 20 minutes from Limerick city, in close proximity to the Orthopaedic hospital and primary care centre in the thriving village of Croom.”

Hundreds of jobs will be created in the building phase and when it is finished.

“The completed scheme will lead to the creation of over 100 new jobs and provide much needed care and support in the local community for over 120 new residents from Croom and the surrounding areas,” said the spokesperson for Hibernia Senior Living Group.

The three-storey nursing home, with an area of 4,717 square metres, and 32 single storey independent living units -  with an  overall area of 1,936 sqm for the 32 units (each unit 60.5 sqm) – is being designed by Demesne Architects.

The nursing home will include en-suite bedrooms, reception and day rooms, TV rooms, dining rooms, kitchen, treatment rooms and salon, family room, library, administration and office rooms, storage rooms, laundry, staff facilities, plant rooms, service rooms and areas, accessible WCs and circulation areas.

Each independent living unit will include a double bedroom, an open plan living / dining / kitchen room, a study, an accessible WC and associated storage and circulation.

Ninety three vehicular parking spaces and 20 cycle parking spaces will be provided.

Vehicular, cycle and pedestrian access will be  via a new distributor road linking to St Senan's Terrace in the village.
