Oscars will be green, white and gold with Irish and Limerick nominees

ALL that glitters is (green, white and) gold as the Academy announced the Oscar nominations today with the Irish taking home a record breaking amount of nods.

Limerick’s own Jon Kenny along with his D’unbelievables co-star, Pat Shortt, are one step closer to becoming Oscar winners as the Banshees of Inisherin is nominated for nine Academy Awards.

Kenny and Shortt play a small role in the major blockbuster, which is Directed by Martin McDonagh and was shot in the west of Ireland.

The Lough Gur actor plays Gerry, a lad who sits at the bar in the local pub owned by Jonjo Devine (Pat Shortt) and the pair pick up where they left off from their comedic antics of the 90’s, a double act.

The comical role is woven alongside the dramatic characters of Pádraic (Colin Farrell) and Colm (Brendan Gleeson) who are no longer friends when Colm delivers a devastating ultimatum to Pádraic, who is none the wiser as to why this lifelong friendship has come to a crushing end.

The nine nominations include: Best Picture, Best Director (Martin McDonagh), Best Actor (Colin Farrell), Best Supporting Actor (Brendan Gleeson and Barry Keoghan) and Best Supporting Actress (Kerry Condon).

That's not the only Treaty County connection as An Cailín Ciúin (The Quiet GIrl) is nominated for Best International Feature Film and stars Caherconlish native, Andrew Bennett.

The story is an adaptation of the short story Foster by Claire Keegan which sees nine year old Cáit spend a Summer with her aunt Eibhlín (Carrie Crowley) and her husband Seán (Andrew Bennett)

Elsewhere Paul Mescal is nominated for Best Actor for his role in Aftersun, An Cailín Ciúin (The Quiet GIrl) is nominated for Best International Feature Film.

The 95th Academy Awards take place on Sunday, March 10 in Los Angeles.
