COUNCIL has begun talks on delivering a community centre for one of the largest estates in Limerick city.
At this month’s metropolitan district meeting, Labour councillor Conor Sheehan asked for an update on what engagement had taken place with the Garryowen Community Development Project (CDP) in relation to a facility for the area.
In a written response, Seamus O’Connor of the local authority stated that it has kicked off initial talks with the group, with regard to potential site options in the area.
“This has yet to be finalised,” Mr O’Connor added.
Councillor Sheehan also sought a rough estimated cost, something which the local authority official was unable to give, as it would be dependent on the type of building agreed.
The lack of a community centre in Garryowen – built in the 1950s – is a major bone of contention in Limerick.
“It's clear as day Garryowen needs a community centre, but it needs input and needs buy-in from central government first of all,” said Cllr Sheehan, who predicted it could cost up to €2m, putting it out of reach of the members’ dedicated annual budget which is spent on smaller projects.
