Dogs are welcome on stage for the production of La Bohème
LIMERICK pooches are being called upon to audition for the romantic opera, La Bohème, which will be performed at University Concert Hall later this year.
As she is bringing one of the most romantic operas, La Bohème, to the stage, award-winning opera director and producer, Ellen Kent, is looking for the next furry Brad Pitt to perform on stage on April 6.
People often say to never work with children or animals. But, Ellen Kent, couldn't disagree more.
“The first time was 20 years ago when my pet cat Holly Go-Lightly was in one of my productions and was an instant hit. Since then, we’ve had horses, dogs, goldfish and even a golden eagle with a 6ft wingspan on stage,” she recalled.
When they last performed La Bohème, Ellen said they asked local people to volunteer their pets, which turned out to be a huge success.
“We even used a rescue dog once and found him dozens of new owners! We’re a nation of animal lovers, after all. I’m sure there is plenty of doggie talent out there”, she commented.
Pets who audition need to be well-behaved, small, used to people and quiet. Owners have to be prepared to go on-stage in costume, to take care of their pups.
Based on Henri Murger’s novel, Scènes de la vie de Bohème, the opera will be performed in Italian, with English subtitles. An Ellen Kent Production, the set will reflect Bohemian art, and will include a brass band, snow effects, as well as a full choir and orchestra.
