Blood shortage crisis: Urgent call for donors issued by IBTS

Last year, the IBTS issued the highest number of blood donation units to Irish hospitals in over a decade

Blood donations clinics will take place in Limerick next week

SEVERE weather events, including Storm Éowyn, and high levels of respiratory illness within communities has significantly impacted blood collections.

The Irish Blood Transfusion Service (IBTS) urgently need new donors, younger donors, donors of all ethnicities and in particular, those of African heritage.

In 2024, the IBTS issued the highest number of blood donation units to Irish hospitals in over a decade, at just under 128,500 units. This exceptionally high demand has continued unabated into 2025.

Details of the upcoming Limerick blood Donation Clinics are as follows: Castletroy Park hotel, Monday February 24 and Tuesday 25, 4.20pm – 7.40pm, Adare Woodlands Hotel, Wednesday, February 26, 4.50pm – 8.10pm and Crescent Shopping Centre Dooradoyle, Thursday, February 27, 3.50pm – 7.10pm. New donors welcome.
