NEW Limerick senior football captain Cillian Fahy says it is an honour to captain his county for 2025. Fahy has replaced Iain Corbett as Limerick senior football captain.
Dromcollogher Broadford clubman Fahy has been a member of the Shannonsiders’ panel since 2015.
“I was absolutely delighted to be asked and following in the footsteps of Iain (Corbett) is a big task. It was a big honour on Sunday to lead the lads out for the first time. Hopefully, we can push on and have a good year,” Fahy said.
Limerick played out a 2-12 to 1-15 draw with Longford oon Sunday. Jimmy Lee's side now switch their focus to Wexford in round two of the Allianz National Football League Division Four.
“It's a big game, Wexford were very unlucky not to go up last year. I think one or two small things went against them in the end. They're a great team and they put a big score last weekend and it'll be a difficult game. It's exciting and it'll be our first home game aswell and we will really get to see how we stack up against a good team.”
Limerick trailed early on 2-2 to 0-1, but fought back well only to be reeled in late on.
“We had a slow start but that is one thing that we would be aiming to correct for next week. I think we showed a lot of character to pull it back. Eventually we got up two and it was great to reel them back in. Unfortunately we didn't close it out, but that's learning we will take from it.”
Fahy feels the new faces in the team put their hands up against Longford.
“A lot of lads made their debuts either coming off the bench or making their first starts, that was definitely a positive.
“One big thing is we created a lot of scoring opportunities, now saying that our conversion rate was below where we wanted it to be but I think we are getting the chances. It's only a matter of time before we started taking them.”
Mark McCarthy, Oran Collins, Fiachra Cotter, Sean Clancy, Darragh O'Hagan and Rory O'Brien all made their debuts for Limerick.
