Limerick Leader Weekly GAA Notes

 Limerick Leader Weekly GAA Notes

AHANE:

Minor Camogie: Our Minor girls got their Championship journey underway on Saturday afternoon in Mackey Park. We played Cillard who from the start were very strong. In tough weather conditions Cillard got on the score sheet first.

Niamh Brennan replied with her first score of the game. Cillard scored next and the ball was traded over and back between the sides until we got our first goal which was a team effort. We worked the ball well into the forward line and then while it was in a ruck, we made connection with it and the ball hit the back of the net.

Cillard responded immediately with a point from play to close the gap to one before Saoirse Casey scored our second goal. It was a pass across the square from Isabelle Collins which Saoirse managed to keep in and in the end the ball took a deflection off Saoirse’s shin and hit the net to give us a four-point lead. Cillard got goal of their own in the eleventh minute.

A well taken shot that left Nicole no chance between the posts. They then scored a point, and the game was level once more. Two more points on the bounce for Cillard put them two ahead before Niamh put a halt on their scoring as she got one from the middle of the field. The final score of the half was Cillards as they got a point from a free. We started the second half with a Niamh Brennan pointed free. Again, Cillard seemed to get their scores from play easier and they tacked on two more points.

Niamh was again called upon to pop over the free to see us narrow the gap to three points with nine minutes gone in the half. Cillard scored two more, before Niamh scored another lovely point from play. Saoirse Casey added to her goal, with a stunning point but with four mihutes left on the clock and three points in it we were against the clock. We played some lovely camogie in that final ten minutes, but we just didn’t get the rub of the green and balls that would usually go over didn’t.

We did struggle throughout both halves with our wide count which ultimately went against us in the end. The girls left it all on the field, and they now face Doon next weekend in Mackey Park.

GALTEE GAELS:

Club Na Nog: On Bank Holiday Monday the under seventeen team travelled to Rathkeale to play Mungret/St Pauls in the County semi final, while they were well beaten they played some great football conceding two early goals they worked their way back into the game, half time score Mungret/St Pauls 2-3 Galtee Gaels 0-7, a goal soon after the break had looked well for Galtee Gaels but it was short lived as they conceded to many goals and went under on the score 6-9 to 2-10.

It was a great performance from the team with only three players up to the age against a team with a lot of players up to the age. It will be the same players making up the minor team next season as the age grades move to the even ages then. This follows a vote of County Board level last January.

A number of clubs requested the members to look at retaining the uneven age grades, at a special meeting recently a proposal to overturn the January decision was put to the members it required a 60% majority to retain the uneven age grades it received 55% its even age grades for next season, with that loss football for Club Na nÓg is completed for this season.

MUNGRET ST PAUL'S:

Camogie: What a fantastic season these U14 girls have given us. It wasn’t to be on Saturday when they played Killeedy is the semi final replay, but we are so proud of the heart and determination they have shown. Huge excitement Thursday night at HQ when our U16 County B Champions dropped in to see our almost 80 strong U10s/12s after training with their cup. Thanks so much to the girls for calling in, it’s great for the younger players to have these fantastic sportswomen to look up to! #CantSeeCantBe

Intermediate Football: It was a dry day in Askeaton but it was a very soft pitch on Saturday 4 November 2023 when Mungret St. Pauls played Dromcollogher Broadford in the Intermediate Football Final. Mungret St. Pauls dominated from the start going three points up before Dromcollogher Broadford got off the mark, there were many miss shots from both sides but Mungret St. Pauls added on another two points before the half time break leaving us four points ahead.

Dromcollogher Broadford might have started with a score in the second half but Mungret St. Pauls took over with a point either side of our goal. An opportunity for Dromcollogher Broadford arose and they took their shot which rattled the net. There was only one more point to each side and with ten minutes left on the clock the ball saw both ends of the pitch with no successful scores. The final whistle eventually blown, Mungret St. Pauls were declared the winners of the Intermediate Football Championship gaining promotion to Senior Football.

Junior A Football: Cappamore was the venue for the Junior A Football Final between Mungret St. Pauls and Camogue Rovers on Sunday 5 November 2023. Mungret St. Pauls dominated from the start denying Camogue Rovers much of a look in. In what was another fantastic day for the club, we won another title on a 2-16 to 0-7 scoreline. Well done to Luke Walsh who was awarded the player of the match. The Cup was presented to joint captains Cian O'Doherty and Sean Moran by the Limerick Football chairman, Wayne Fitzgerald and Irish Officer Gerry McNamara.

Movember: This year we are following on from last years huge success when we held Movember for a Grow a Mo for Joe as you all helped to raise over €4000 for Milford Hospice. So men, put the razors aside and grow that Mo for November which is dedicated to brave and selfless men to grow a moustache, and women to step up and support them, all to raise awareness and funds for men's health - specifically prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health and suicide prevention. This fundraising page is for those of you who would like to show your support. The donations will be going to Milford Care Centre in memory of a gentleman, Joe Harrington who sadly is no longer with us. We are asking our men to take part in growing a Mo for Joe for the month of November.

SOUTH LIBERTIES:

Parish Lotto: There was no winner of last week's local lotto but we had 3 lucky dips with Niall Corcoran, Pauline Kirby and Paul Monahan.

Junior Hurlers: Hard luck to our junior lads in the recent County Semi Final, when they lost out to Monaleen last Sunday morning.

Keeping the Dream Alive: This book, commemorating the jubilee of our 1973 All Ireland Hurling Win was launched last Sunday in the Fitzgerald's Woodlands House Hotel. On the night our own Eamon Grimes, Captain that year, and his wife Helen were presented with a beautiful bunch of flowers also to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. Pat Hartigan was also present but Joe Mc Kenna was unable to make it. Congratulations to all involved in the production of this wonderful book which is now on sale to the general public at a cost of €30. All proceeds will go to the Children's Ark in University Hospital Limerick and the Limerick Society of St. Vincent de Paul.

Limerick Game of my Life: This is another great book that will be going on sale to the public on November 15th by author David Byrne so keep an eye out for this one too.

ST KIERAN'S

Oskar Night: The Oskar rehearsals are over, and the films have been acted out and the journey is nearing its end. On this Saturday November 11, the doors open at 6.30pm in the Devon Inn Hotel Templeglantine, for the Oskar final night in aid of the St Kieran's GAA Club field development fund.

The show starts at 8pm, and tickets are like gold dust. The show is produced by Kevin Rowe Events, and it promises to be an amazing night viewing the local actors/actresses showcase their talents in seven films. Interviews will be shown, and Oskar's will be awarded by the celebrity judges in several categories during the show, plus a DJ to end the night.
Semi Final: St Kieran's lost to Ballylanders by 1-11 to 1-7 in the semi- final of the County Junior B Football Championship played at Cappamore Gaelic Grounds on Saturday November 4. They trailed from the throw in and were down by 1-5 to 0-5 at half-time.

The more experienced and physical south team moved further ahead to book a place in the final. St Kieran's were missing a few of their starting team which proved too big a handicap on the day. Well done to the players and management who had a successful year winning the West title.
