'Integral Currid will be a massive loss to Limerick' - Gearóid Hegarty

Limerick hurler Gearóíd Hegarty spoke at length at the launch of Zambrero's bid to pack 80,000 meals on Sunday.

LIMERICK star Gearóid Hegarty says that everyone has to now move on after the news broke that renowned sports performance coach Caroline Currid will be no longer be part of the county's hurling setup.

The Sligo native has been a huge part of Limerick's unprecedented success in recent years but will not be with them in their drive for a fifth All-Ireland title in-a-row next year.

"I would be lying if I said that she isn't a loss," said Hegarty this week. "She is a massive loss. She has been so integral to our team over the last few years.

"I have always said that we wouldn't be where we are today without her. It's understandable. She has a young family and is a busy woman outside of Limerick GAA as well.

"She is living up the country and was doing a lot of travelling. All good things come to an end unfortunately. We are forever grateful for what she has done for us as a squad. We can only thank her for what she has done. It's a shame but that's life."

The St Patrick's clubman feels that the bond that Currid helped create within the group of players could well be her lasting legacy. He added that Currid was a big help to him when his form dipped earlier this year.

"She helped create such a bond between us. She was integral in creating that. That's the lasting impression that I will have of Caroline is that she helped create that and was the main driver of that.

"It's a pity that she is gone. We have to just move on and get on with it."

Hegarty was speaking at the launch of Zambrero's bid to pack 80,000 meals to fight world hunger at St Mary's College in Rathmines, Dublin on Sunday.
