DOON Convent National School are toast of the Limerick camogie fraternity following their victory in the Green and White Cup over Ballybrown NS at Mick Neville Park.

The east Limerick school saw off a brave challenge from the city side in a game that was played in blazing sunshine at the Rathkeale venue.

Ballybrown overcame west champion.s Broadford NS to book their spot in the decider, while Doon saw off the challenge of Bruree NS to reach the final

Ballybrown NS got the first score of the game with a goal by captain Eva McCarthy. However, Doon responded in perfect
fashion when Millie Clancy raised a green flag at the other end of the field.

Both sides had opportunities. Ballybrown NS goalkeeper Kate Shanahan pulled off a stunning save to deflect a shot wide. Doon converted the resultant '65 to lead by a point at the break.

Doon started the second half in great style with a Millie Clancy goal and then they tacked on a point from
a free. Ballybrown fought back with two goal chances themselves but were denied by a strong Doon defence.

The east Limerick school soon took control as Liz Blackmore, Maya Fahey and Amy Crowe raced
through for goals following the injury to Ballybrown captain Eva McCarthy. She soon bravely returned to the fray and the gallant Ballybrown side came right back into the contest.

Goals from Katelyn Foley and Maria Conway either side of a point from Emer Byrnes saw the momentum swing dramatically
but the comeback too late and the Doon girls held out for a memorable victory.

Joe Lyons of Alllianz Cumann na mBunscol Luimnigh presented the Green and White Shield to Doon captain Maya Fahey. Mr Lyons praised all four teams for their performances on a great day for camogie.

Mr Lyons added that all four teams had represented their divisions with skill and pride. He praised the teachers and other mentors who had prepared the teams for the tournament and predicted that many of the girls would be seen in the
Limerick colours in years to come.

He also thanked referee Seán Carey and Daniel O’Donnell who had officiated for the second day in a row. Mr Lyons concluded the post match celebrations by praising the unsung hero of Cumann na mBunscol, Br James Dormer.

In addition, Mr Lyons added that Brother Dormer was present at least an hour before throw-in to ensure everything was in order. Br Dormer received a well –deserved round of applause.
