The King’s Island Flood Relief Scheme is well underway with construction works progressing across several sites
A SIGNIFICANT chapter in the King’s Island Flood Relief Scheme is well underway with construction works progressing steadily across several key areas. The scheme is designed to protect residents and properties from future flooding.
Very significant flooding occurred in Spring 2014 when the existing defences failed locally, allowing flood waters onto the Island.
From June 16, the section of road from Thomond Bridge to the community centre will be closed to both vehicles and pedestrians to facilitate flood defence works in Verdant Place. Diversion routes will be in place. Construction of the new flood defence wall behind the community centre continues, with shuttering works progressing as scheduled.
The importation of material for the new flood embankment along St Ita's Street site has commenced, resulting in frequent truck movement in and out. Motorists and pedestrians are urged to exercise caution, particularly near site entrances. Dust mitigation measures—including road sweepers, and water tankers—are in place and operating depending on weather conditions.

Work has also commenced in Area A4 where temporary fencing is currently being installed along the rear of the properties of St Munchin's Street. Work on a haul road is expected to begin in the coming week, facilitating the delivery of material for the flood embankment in this area.
Meanwhile, work is progressing well on the new flood embankment in Area A5/A6 – Lee Estate. Work on the new flood defense wall near Athlunkard Boat Club will commence in the coming weeks. Enabling works to facilitate a full road closure on the northern end of Sir Harry’s Mall begin today, June 9.
This includes the realignment of the road outside the Absolute Hotel to temporarily create two-way traffic along with a left/right turn on to Seamus O’Cinneide Street. A turning circle will be established for HGVs and coaches.
