Improved water supply for Limerick town following replacement of watermains by Uisce Éireann

Since 2018, Uisce Éireann has invested over €500 million to upgrade the underground water network across Ireland through the delivery of the national Leakage Reduction Programme

Pipe dream becomes a reality: Ballycarrane benefits from a more secure water supply

Uisce Éireann has replaced over 1.9 kilometres of aged watermains that were prone to bursts and leakage in Ballycarrane

UISCE Éireann has replaced over 1.9 kilometres of aged watermains that were prone to bursts and leakage in Ballycarrane in Patrickswell and surrounding areas.

The works commenced in March 2025, with old water mains on the L-1425 Newboro, Ballycarrane Patrickswell and L-1427 Ballycarrane, Patrickswell, replaced with new modern pipes, as part of Uisce Éireann’s national Leakage Reduction Programme.

Marking the end of this project, Programme Manager at Uisce Éireann, Brian McCarthy commented on the benefits, saying:

“The importance of these works cannot be understated and form part of a significant investment by Uisce Éireann to upgrade infrastructure and provide an improved water supply to enable local communities to thrive for years to come. The replacement of these old, damaged pipes will significantly lower the instances of bursts, outages and leakage on the network. We would like to thank the local community for their cooperation and patience as we carried out these essential works.”

Following the completion of the works, it is necessary to reinstate the permanent road surface and these works will be programmed and carried out in due course by Uisce Éireann in partnership with Limerick Council.

The works were carried out by Ward and Burke on behalf of Uisce Éireann.

Since 2018, Uisce Éireann has invested over €500 million to upgrade the underground water network across the country through the delivery of the national Leakage Reduction Programme. Uisce Éireann is investing a further €250 million every year up to the end of 2030 - fixing leaks and replacing pipes to provide a more reliable water supply. Uisce Éireann is on target to reduce the national rate of leakage to 25% by 2030, from 46% in 2018.

Members of the public can report any leaks on the public water network by contacting Uisce Éireann at 1800 278 278 or online at Report a Leak.
