SAINT John the Baptist Community school in Hospital has one group project featuring in this year’s BT Young Scientist Exhibition under the health and wellbeing category.

The students from the county Limerick school are conducting research into the correlation between sports and mental health.

Students Anna Malone and Lisa Kennedy of St John the Baptist Community school were inspired to investigate this topic after it was noticed that during their junior cert, many in their year took a step back from playing sports, which in turn led to an increase in stress.

They decided to conduct research through different interviews with their peers and sports people.

The students were hoping to outline a clear correlation between playing sports and positive mental health.

Brid O’Dwyer, teacher at St John the Baptist, who is overseeing this year’s Young Scientist groups, expressed the excitement and pride of the students nominated for this year’s BT Young Scientist Exhibition: “Their results are showing that they’re correct. They are excited to go to the RDS this January and experience the BTYSE!”

All staff at St John the Baptist Community school in Hospital wish to say the best of luck to Anna and Lisa as they take their findings to Dublin and experience what the competition is all about.
