Limerick school's parents council hope community will 'pitch' in for big fundraiser

MAY was a busy month for Bilboa National School's teachers, pupils and parents with First Holy Communion and Confirmation being celebrated - and June is set to be even busier before the summer holidays!

Bilboa National School Parents Council have unveiled plans for a new astro turf pitch and fencing which will cost €52,000 to provide a facility for current and future generations of children from Cappamore.

Noreen Walsh, of the parents council, said they have already been collecting bottles and cans in a giant bin for recycling. €70 and counting has been raised since the Easter holidays, on top of €144 from an Easter readathon.

The next fundraising event is an old clothes collection from this Monday, June 9 to Thursday, June 12 in the school. Clean men’s, women’s and children’s clothes, as well as paired shoes, handbags, belts, curtains, and bed linen are very welcome.

After they are all sorted it will be time for a scrap metal collection on Saturday and Sunday, June 14 and June 15 in the Limerick and Clare Education Training Board’s Cappamore campus (formerly St Michael’s College).

Bilboa National School pupils Henry O’Leary, Sarah Walsh and Roisin O'Brien (pictured above) are helping to promote the event and the message, “Let’s clean-up and support a local school”.

Used car, truck, tractor and household batteries will also be accepted.

Noreen said this event has the potential to raise a lot of funds for the school and urges one and all to load up their scrap metal and batteries and drop it off on June 14 and June 15.

Bilboa NS was awarded its first ever Active School flag way back in 2019. This prestigious accolade is given to schools who “strive to achieve a physically educated and physically active school community”.

It is the equivalent of the Olympic flag to primary schools and they had their very own Olympian, Rosemary Ryan, to raise it.

These fundraisers towards building an astro turf pitch will help current and future boys and girls keep active.
