OVER 100 Limerick residents have joined forces with the University of Limerick through the UL Citizens’ Assembly and have identified three UL research projects aimed at developing a more sustainable future for the city and region.

After hearing nine innovative project pitches, local residents voted for the top three projects which each received €10,000 to make their idea happen.

The projects included a host of multi-disciplinary expertise, from business and science, to music and medicine. The short-listed projects were selected according to their capacity to address an identified UN Sustainable Development Goal. Presenters had to show in detail their plans to engage with the people of Limerick and the potential of their project to positively impact the city and county.

The winning projects were: ‘Arise – Activity and Recreation in an Inclusive Sensory Environment’, ‘Future on the Hill - Growing Resilience, Wellbeing and Confidence together in Southill’ and ‘PRIME – Progression Risks/Resilience in Marginalised Environments.’

Professor Maura Adshead, head of community engagement at UL said: ‘The UL Citizen’s Assembly provides a convivial space for academics and citizens to get together, make new connections and consider future collaborations. It provides UL academics with an opportunity to develop their public engagement skills and experience and involves citizens in meaningful decision-making regarding SDG focused initiatives.”
