RESIDENTS in the Ballyhoura region of south Limerick can learn how to create their own tiny forests to enhance biodiversity around their communities.

Ballyhoura Development and Living Woodlands will be teaching Limerick residents how to locally plant trees and create biodiversity havens at Coote Hall Resource Centre in Kilmallock at 7:30pm this Wednesday.

Participants will discover how they can create tiny forests with Dr. John Galvin of Living Woodlands introducing the Miyawaki method of planting, and offering useful tips on how communities can create small but effective havens for biodiversity.

Living Woodlands is a social enterprise founded by Limerick brothers John and Colm Galvin.

This January 22 event champions how small actions can help the environment and highlights the pivotal role of community-led initiatives like the EU Climate Pact in fostering climate awareness and action.

Rhiannon Laubach, EU climate pact ambassador and development officer with Ballyhoura Development said “local action is key to making a difference”.

“The power of community is essential in addressing global challenges like climate change,” she said.

“By encouraging residents to do something as simple as plant some trees in their neighbourhood, we could be making an impact on the landscape’s biodiversity, benefitting everyone.

“The EU Climate Pact is built on the foundation of collaboration and local action, and this event highlights the power of community in driving forward Ireland’s and Europe’s climate-neutral future.”

The European Climate Pact, launched by the European Commission as part of the European Green Deal, aims to make the EU the first climate-neutral continent by 2050.

As a member of the climate pact, Ballyhoura Deveolpment contributes to this grassroots movement which aims to foster a broad and inclusive climate action community across Europe that unites people in the fight against climate change and helps them adapt to its consequences.
