DURING the month of January, real Christmas trees can be brought free of charge to any of the recycling centres across Limerick city and county.

Limerick City and County Council is encouraging all households to dispose of their Christmas Trees in an environmentally friendly way.

The council-run recycling centres in Mungret, Kilmallock, Newcastle West and Gortadroma will accept Christmas Trees for the month of January 2025.

In addition to this, Limerick City and County Council is setting up three additional collection points in the city, where people can drop off their real Christmas Trees for recycling.

The collection points will be open from 9.30am until 3pm on the following days and locations: Saturday, January 4, 2025 at Our Lady Of Lourdes, Childers Road.

On Friday, January 10, 2025 at Watch House Cross Complex, Moyross and on Saturday, January 11, 2025 on Musgrave’s Car Park, Park Road, Rhebogue.

There is a limit of one tree per person.

In the county, the Kilmallock centre, located at the Shannon Development Industrial Estate on Bruree Road, is open Tuesday and Saturday from 10am to 4:45pm, as are the ones in Mungret, located in Bunlicky and Newcastle West, located on station road.

Gortadroma, also accepting Christmas trees for shredding free of charge, will be closed until Tuesday, January 7, 2025.

They will open that day and the next, Wednesday, January 8, from 9am to 3pm. Gortadroma Landfill site closed in 2014.

However, a waste and recycling centre is in operation at Gortadroma Landfill site.

Please note opening times for each centre are subject to change during the Christmas period and Bank Holidays.

The public are urged to contact Customer Service for further information.

All trees will be shredded for use as bark mulch across the various parks in Limerick and will contribute to the compost/bark mulch freely available to the public from Mungret Recycling Centre.
