“GREATER sustainable transport connectivity” is the main aim of one Limerick City and County Council proposal for greenway upgrade works.

Members of the public are being invited to voice their opinions and offer suggestions on the proposals to construct a pedestrian and cycle link from the existing Castletroy Urban Greenway to the National Technology Park (NTP) also in Castletroy.

This Active Travel Scheme intends “to create greater sustainable transport connectivity” in a dense residential area, “enhance Active Travel accessibility to key local amenities” such as schools, the University of Limerick (UL) and businesses, and “reduce traffic in the vicinity”.

The proposed project is being funded by the National Transport Authority (NTA).

The proposals for the Castletroy Urban Greenway to NTP Active Travel Scheme include: the continuation of the Castletroy Greenway, north of the Gaelscoil carpark and the crossing on the Gaelscoil access road.

As well as this, they envision a crossing at the R445 for cyclists and pedestrians, a new cycle path and footpath to link with Holland Road within IDA lands, cycle path and footpath upgrades on Holland Road and a controlled crossing across Plassey Park Road to link to the proposed Limerick City Greenway.

Director of transportation and mobility with Limerick Council, Brian Kennedy, said: “The Active Travel network across the east side of Limerick city is continuing to progress as significant works around Plassey Park and Plassey Park Road approach a conclusion.

“This proposal is the latest scheme the team is progressing as it looks to enhance the attractiveness of short walking and cycling trips for those living in, and commuting to and from, the Castletroy area.

“Thousands of users have already availed of the Castletroy Urban Greenway since its opening in 2021.”

A non-statutory public consultation period runs until Friday, October 25.

An in-person consultation is to be held in the Munster GAA Headquarters building, Castletroy, on Thursday, October 10, from 12:30pm.
