The successful groups will undertake projects that support biodiversity, improve energy efficiency, reduce waste and promote more sustainable communities throughout the city and county

TWENTY-THREE community groups across Limerick are set to deliver a wide range of climate action projects following the allocation of €887,575.89 under Strand 1 Phase 2 of the Community Climate Action Programme.

The successful groups, working in partnership with Limerick City and County Council, will undertake projects that support biodiversity, improve energy efficiency, reduce waste and promote more sustainable communities throughout the city and county.

Funding awarded earlier this year by the Department of Climate, Energy and the Environment will help community organisations transform local ideas into practical actions that contribute to national climate goals while delivering lasting benefits at a local level.

Projects being delivered include the installation of solar panels on community facilities, the development of biodiversity trails and community gardens, the creation of pollinator habitats and pocket forests, food waste reduction initiatives, energy efficiency upgrades and community cycling infrastructure.

The diverse range of projects reflects the growing commitment of communities across Limerick to tackling climate challenges at a local level while enhancing community facilities, protecting biodiversity and promoting more sustainable lifestyles.

The 23 successful applicant organisations who have received funding for community climate action projects in Limerick are: Southill Area Centre CLG, Ferndale Residents’ Association, St. Ita’s AFC, Meadowbrook Residents’ Association, Limerick Island Community Partners CLG, Ballyhoura Rural Services CLG, Kilfinane Tidy Towns, Rockhill Bruree Community Council CLG, Hospital Community Council CLG, Rathbane Golf Course, Newcastle West Men’s Shed, Ballingarry AFC, St. Munchin’s Community Centre, Templeglantine Community Council, Ballyhoura Development CLG, Ash Management Group, Ballyneety Men’s Shed, Cappamore Development Association, ADAPT, Croom Community Development Association, Tait House Community Enterprise, Kilmallock Tidy Towns and CareBright CLG.

Welcoming the announcement, Mayor of Limerick, John Moran, commented: "This funding recognises the tremendous commitment shown by community groups throughout Limerick in taking practical action to address climate change.

"From community gardens and biodiversity projects to renewable energy initiatives and active travel infrastructure, these projects demonstrate how local action can make a real difference. I want to congratulate all of the successful groups whose vision and dedication are helping to build a greener, more sustainable future for our communities."

Príomh Chomhairleoir of Limerick City and County Council, Cllr. Tom Ruddle added: “This funding is a welcome boost for the many community groups and volunteers leading climate and biodiversity action across Limerick. Their commitment is making a real difference on the ground, and this support will help them build on that work.”
