Driver appears in court in connection with double fatal collision in Limerick

'This is a serious case involving two fatalities': Inspector Gearoid Thompson, proseucting
A YOUNG man has appeared in court in connection with a fatal traffic collision in county Limerick that claimed the lives of two Salesian Agricultural College students this year.
Patrick Carroll, aged 20, of Drinagh, Fivealley, Birr, Co Offaly is accused of drink driving and dangerous driving on the N69 at Ballyengland, Askeaton on February 20, 2024. Mr Carroll, accompanied by his parents, attended Newcastle West district court last Thursday.
Inspector Gearoid Thompson, prosecuting, asked Judge Carol Anne Coolican for a lengthy adjournment for directions from the Director of Public Prosecutions.
“This is a serious case involving two fatalities. A file for the Director is at an advanced stage. You will see from the summons it is a tragic matter. It is subject to a large file to the Director of Public Prosecutions,” said Insp Thompson.
Solicitor Michael O’Donnell acted as agent for solicitor Daniel Krieth in the brief procedural matter.

Four young men were in the vehicle, driven by Mr Carroll, at the time. Darragh Dullea, aged 20, from Clonakilty, Cork and Cillian Kirwan, aged 19, from Piltown, Kilkenny, were killed in the road traffic collision.
All four were second year students in Agricultural Mechanisation at Salesian Agricultural College, Pallaskenry.
