A DATE could be set for the trial of a retired Superintendent and four serving gardaí in December of this year.

They are all accused of attempting to pervert the course of justice on 42 counts in total relating to alleged squaring away of fixed penalty charge notices.

Those involved in the case are retired Superintendent Edmond (Eamon) O’Neill, aged 56, of Limerick garda division, Sergeant Annemarie Hassett aged 39 of Kerry garda division, Sergeant Michelle Leahy, aged 47 of Limerick garda division, Garda Tom McGlinchey, aged 51, of Limerick garda division and Garda Colm Geary of Clare garda division.

The charges emerged after an investigation by the Garda National Bureau of Criminal Investigation into alleged corruption.

The alleged offences occurred on dates between October 9, 2016 and September 6, 2019.

At Limerick Circuit Court, Judge Colin Daly adjourned the matter to the next call-over on December 18.

The trial is expected to last eight weeks and legal aid has been granted owing to the complexity of the case.
