A LIMERICK driver was among those caught speeding by gardai over the October bank holiday weekend, it has been revealed.

During a roads policing operation, there were three fatalities as a result of three fatal collisions on roads across Ireland.

Throughout last weekend, gardaí conducted both mandatory intoxicant testing checkpoints and regular, high-visibility policing checkpoints across the country.

During this, a total of 218 people were arrested for driving under the influence of an intoxicant, with approximately six of these being in Limerick.

Just over 4,840 drivers were detected for speeding offences during the nationwide operation.

Notable speeds detected on Tuesday, October 27, by gardai included someone travelling at 94km/h in a 60km/h zone on the N20 in Bruree, Co Limerick.

An Garda Síochána and the Road Safety Authority are continuing to urge all road users to support their efforts in keeping people safe on the roads.

A spokesperson said: “As the evenings get darker, An Garda Síochána is urging road users to be mindful of and take extra care around vulnerable road users, in particular pedestrians and cyclists. Cyclists and pedestrians should ensure they are clearly visible in darker conditions and always observe their surroundings.

“Road safety needs to be a priority for everyone. Slow down and adhere to the speed limit. Never drive under the influence of drink or drugs. Wear your seatbelt and don’t get distracted by mobile devices when you are driving,” the spokesperson concluded.
