Prison for Limerick man over unpaid fines dating back more than a decade

The Limerick man’ solicitor informed the judge that his client was ‘not in a position’ to pay and so, a custodial sentence was imposed
A MAN has been sent to Limerick Prison after failing to pay road traffic fines dating back more than 10 years.
Damian Carmello, aged 44, of O’Callaghan Avenue, Kileely, Limerick, appeared before Judge Patricia Harney regarding an incident which occurred on May 21, 2016.
Limerick District Court heard that on this date, Mr Carmello was found to be driving without a licence or insurance. Fines were later imposed on him and he was ordered to pay €200 for driving without a licence and €400 for not having insurance at that time.
During the most-recent hearing on Monday, solicitor, John Herbert, informed Judge Harney that his client was “not in a position” to pay this €600 and so, a custodial sentence was imposed.
Damian Carmello was ordered to serve four days’ imprisonment for his driving without insurance offence and a further two days for driving without a licence.
Judge Patricia Harney informed the defendant that these sentences are to be consecutive, meaning they will be served one after the other.
No explanation was given in court for the delay in concluding the case.
Mr Carmello should now be released.
