A MAN was charged at a special sitting of Limerick District Court this Friday evening in connection with a violent incident in Newcastle West last weekend.
Robert Chiper, aged 31, of Liosan, Newcastle West, appeared before Judge Alec Gabbett.
Sergeant Paul Bentley, of Rathkeale garda station, gave evidence of arresting, charging and cautioning the accused.
Sgt Bentley said he arrested Mr Chiper at 8.45am on Friday morning at Newcastle West garda station before conveying the defendant to Henry Street garda station.

The garda sergeant said he later charged Mr Chiper with violent disorder in The Square, Newcastle West and assault causing harm at Bishop Street, Newcastle West on Sunday, May 25.
“He made no reply to the charges after caution,” said Sgt Bentley.
Inspector Fergal Hanrahan, prosecuting on behalf of the State, said there was no objection to bail subject to a number of conditions.
Michael O’Donnell, solicitor for Mr Chiper during the brief procedural matter, said the bail conditions were on consent.
Mr Chiper was ordered to stay out of all licenced premises; be of good behaviour and sober habits; sign on three times a week in Newcastle West garda station and have no contact with the alleged injured party.
Mr O’Donnell applied for free legal aid, on behalf of his client, who works part-time installing pipelines.
Judge Gabbett said Mr Chiper was a suitable candidate for free legal aid.
Insp Hanrahan said DPP’s directions were awaited and asked for matters to be put back to July 22 in Newcastle West Court.
