REPORTS of bogus tradesmen who targeted a couple in their home in Limerick has sparked gardaí to issue a warning about cold calls.
On Thursday, January 30, a person posing as a tradesman called to a home in the Mayorstne area of Limerick city and offered to work on the couple’s roof for a fee.
“As the cold caller tradesman carried out the work, he informed the owners of the house there was further work to be carried out at an additional cost,” said Sergeant Michelle O’Halloran, crime prevention officer of Henry Street Garda Station.
“It was then the homeowners became suspicious. In order to avoid a similar situation, please tell a caller to your door that you never employ a tradesperson ‘cold calling’ to your door.”

Offering further advice, Sgt O’Halloran said that those who may have elderly or vulnerable neighbours or friends should warn them of possible scams.
“If you suspect that bogus callers or tradespeople are in your area and appear suspicious, never hesitate to contact the gardaí immediately,” Sgt O’Halloran said.
“Genuine callers or tradespeople will not be offended by any enquiries the Gardai may make and indeed, usually welcome them.”
