LIMERICK Traveller Network (LTN) today launched its first-ever Strategic Plan at a special event hosted in the Limerick City and County Council offices.
The occasion marks a significant moment for the Traveller community in Limerick and signals what LTN hopes will be the beginning of a stronger, more collaborative working relationship between the Network and local statutory and community and voluntary agencies.
Established in 2019 by Traveller women Olive O’Reilly and Margaret O’Brien, LTN now represents the majority of Travellers across Limerick City and has worked tirelessly to give the community a united voice. The Strategic Plan, developed through extensive consultations with Traveller families and local stakeholders, sets out a five-year roadmap (2026–2030) focused on the most pressing issues identified by the community: Mental health, education and school engagement, accommodation, youth and family supports and discrimination.
Over recent years, LTN has become a key driver of community-led change, delivering initiatives such as the Traveller Education Change Project, political awareness campaigns, wellbeing events, mentoring supports and active engagement with schools, youth services and Traveller accommodation structures.

The launch of the Strategic Plan in the Council chamber - with Mayor of Limerick, John Moran hosting the event - sends an important message about shared commitment. For the Traveller community, this visibility and recognition reflects a step toward more equitable partnership in decisions that directly affect their lives.
Speaking at the launch, LTN co-founder Olive O’Reilly said:
"This plan comes directly from Travellers in Limerick - our voices, our stories, our hopes for our children. Having Mayor Moran launch it in the Council offices means a great deal to us. It shows that agencies and services are starting to understand Traveller issues more clearly, and we are hopeful that this is the beginning of a better working relationship with Limerick City and County Council. When Travellers and services come together, real change is possible."
LTN will continue working with local partners, Council departments, schools, health services and community organisations to turn the Strategic Plan into action and deliver meaningful improvements for Traveller families across Limerick.
