WCI Limerick Money Matters for Women which took place on October 16
WOMEN'S Collective Ireland - Limerick will host a special evening event aimed at helping women better understand how politics works and encouraging greater engagement in civic life in November.
Following the success of their Money Matters for Women event earlier this month, the group is turning its focus to political awareness with an event titled Making Sense of Political Nonsense. The session will feature expert speakers offering insight into how local and national governments operate, as well as the roles of bodies such as the Electoral Commission.
Designed as a safe and accessible space, the event will invite participants to ask any questions they might have, to “What is a Ceann Comhairle?” to “What services do local councils provide?”
Organisers stress that there are no silly questions, only opportunities to learn.

Yvie Murphy, Coordinator of Women’s Collective Ireland – Limerick, said “When we come across politics being discussed on the TV, news or radio, it is always assumed that people have a certain base level of knowledge, but what if someone doesn’t? If I turn on the radio and don’t understand what people are talking about, I am not going to listen. I will most likely turn it off and not engage.” She continued, “We work with women all the time who would like to know more about how our political system works and how they can engage with it but have no idea where to start gaining that information. That is what our event is about.”
The evening will also include perspectives on navigating the Irish political system from a migrant viewpoint, helping to make politics more inclusive and understandable for all women in the community.
Making Sense of Political Nonsense takes place on Wednesday, November 5th, from 6pm to 9pm at the Absolute Hotel, Limerick.
The event is free, but places are limited and must be booked in advance.
