Seven outdoor amenities set to benefit from major investment

Funding is set to enhance outdoor amenities including walking trails and nature routes

OUTDOOR amenities across Limerick are set to benefit from a €265,510 funding boost under the Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme (ORIS) 2024–2025.

The funding will support the development and enhancement of walking trails, nature walks, and rural infrastructure throughout the county.

The investment, announced by the Department of Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht, will fund a mix of project planning and small-scale improvements.

Key initiatives include scoping for new walking routes in Ballylanders and Templeglantine, location assessments for a Ballyhoura Community pump track, upgrades to Kilmoylan Nature Walk, lighting in Newcastle West, and marketing of trails in Adare, Kilmallock, and Killeedy.

The ORIS scheme is designed to develop and enhance outdoor recreation infrastructure in rural areas, supporting activities such as walking, cycling, hiking, and kayaking.

The initiative aims to improve quality of life for local residents while also attracting visitors and promoting tourism in rural Ireland.

It also provides support for the necessary repair, maintenance, enhancement or promotion of existing outdoor recreational infrastructure in rural areas across Ireland.

This latest round of funding marks a continued investment in the health, well-being, and economic development of Limerick’s rural communities.

Welcoming the announcement, Minister Patrick O’Donovan said the funding directly supports the ambition of the National Outdoor Recreation Strategy.

Mr O'Donovan said, “When projects are delivered, this funding will provide a major boost to the local economy by attracting visitors and furthering our reputation as a destination for adventure tourism. These amenities are here for us all to enjoy, and I encourage everyone to get out and make the most of what our outdoors has to offer.”
