VOLUNTEERS from Croom Family Resource Centre, a member of The National Meals on Wheels Network, have joined a national demonstration, warning that without urgent government funding, they may be unable to continue delivering vital meals to older people in their community.

This demonstration outside Leinster House in Dublin highlighted the importance of ensuring the long-term sustainability of these essential services, including Croom Meals on Wheels, which provide vital support to older and vulnerable people there and in surrounding areas.

Following the demonstration on April 30, members of the Oireachtas were invited to an Information Day in Buswells Hotel with opportunities to drop in throughout the day, which a number of Limerick deputies availed of.

The National Meals on Wheels Network provided an insight into the work it carries out and its need for increased funding and Meals on Wheels providers such as Croom FRC. It also shared insights into the invaluable services they deliver, as well as the growing challenges they face in their local areas.

Croom Meals on Wheels service is facing many challenges that risk their ability to meet rising demand. They don't receive any funding for their operations so the service is completely dependent on volunteers.

Sam Milburn, Croom Meals on Wheels volunteer added: “We (Croom Meals on Wheels Volunteers) see everyday the benefits Croom Meals on Wheels brings to the people who receive our meals.

“Croom Meals on Wheels is not just about the meal, it's about community, companionship and connection. Our service needs to be funded, to be sustainable and realistic to meet the needs of our community now and into the future.”

Croom Family Resource Centre became a member of the National Meals on Wheels Network in April 2024. It provides a range of supports, services and development opportunities that address the needs of individuals, groups, families, and the community.

Additional pressures such as rising insurance premiums, complex compliance requirements, and the drive for digital transformation add further strain - particularly for smaller, community-based providers. Despite these obstacles, the local service remains committed to supporting older people in living independently and with dignity in their own homes.

Tracey Noone, development officer for the National Meals on Wheels Network said: “The National Meals on Wheels Network’s strategy aims to ensure sustainable funding, collaboration and innovation for providers to meet growing needs.

“Increased funding is required for the Network to develop National Meals on Wheels Standards, design specific software, and implement both to ensure national accessibility and continue the Network’s work on behalf of Meals on Wheels’ providers.”
