LIMERICK City and County Council (LCCC) has commenced works in partnership with Thomond RFC to expand the club’s existing grounds in Moyross, paving the way for upgraded facilities at Fitzgerald Park to support the club’s growing membership.

Co-ordinated by the Regeneration, Sports & Recreation Directorate at Limerick City and County Council, the project is being undertaken by Martins Construction Ltd.

Funding for the project was provided by the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage, under the Limerick Regeneration Framework Implementation Plan.

The additional land will facilitate provision of a full-sized rugby pitch, as per IRFU requirements, and an additional training area.

The works comprise of construction of a new boundary to the extension area, demolition of an existing boundary wall, associated paths and steps, foul drainage and utility diversions.

It’s expected work will be completed in early 2026.

Welcoming the advancement of the project, Mayor of Limerick, John Moran commented: “Today’s sod turning at Thomond RFC marks another milestone in delivering more for Moyross.

“This collaboration between Limerick City and County Council and the club will bring enhanced facilities to Fitzgerald Park, which will hopefully support Thomond’s growing membership and their desire to have greater community impact.

"All of these actions are part of a wider vision for Moyross - from the new train station which is now going through planning, new housing, to real progress on the University Way link and the RIAI roadmap for the area. Step by step, we are building more for Moyross and showing what’s possible when ambition, partnership and belief in our people come together.”

Trustee of Thomond RFC, Eddie Hughes, said: “We are determined to continue growing and developing our club, despite the challenges posed by limited playing areas and infrastructure constraints. This development is a crucial step towards realising our vision of providing the opportunity for even more people to be part of a more inclusive and vibrant rugby community in Limerick, in an area that needs opportunities the most.”

Príomh Chomhairleoir, Cllr Catherine Slattery said: “This project is a fantastic example of how collaboration between LCCC and community organisations can deliver real, lasting benefits. Thomond RFC plays a vital role in the lives of so many in Moyross and beyond, and these enhanced facilities will ensure the club continues to thrive and grow. I’m proud to support an initiative that promotes inclusion, ambition, and investment in our local sporting clubs and people.”

Acting Director of Regeneration at Limerick City and County Council, Declan White added: “Limerick City and County Council is thrilled to see ground broken at Thomond RFC, to enable the growth of the sport in the Northside of the city. We are delighted to work with the club in delivering an extension of their grounds to serve current and future players at Thomond RFC.”

Thomond RFC currently caters for three senior teams, four youth teams and six mini teams (mixed boys and girls). In addition, the Club has a ‘Thomond Rugby for All’ team, which caters for 20 boys and girls who require assisted care. The club are ambitious in developing both on and off the pitch in the coming years.

As well as catering for rugby enthusiasts on the northside of the city, the club has recently enjoyed success on the pitch and last season secured a return to the All-Ireland League (AIL) with their flagship team.
