A “FUN, free, fabulous and festive” parade is set to light up the River Shannon next month.

Santa Splash on the Shannon takes place on Saturday, December 6, from 5pm from outside St Michael’s Rowing Club at O’Callaghan Strand.

Two 40-foot long Limerick Dragonboats will lead the flotilla, joined by Shannon Dragons and a number of clubs, including the Limerick Kayaking Academy, the Treaty Suicide Boat, Limerick Narwhals and others.

The sparking procession will go all the way up to JJ Bowles pub at Thomondgate and return back via the Three Bridges.

Set up in 2016, Limerick Dragons is a breast cancer survivors group.

Dragon boat padding is recognised globally as helpful post surgery and in treating lymphoma.

Independent councillor Ursula Gavan, who is organising the event, said all are welcome to follow the parade along the riverside.

“This is about going back to basics. We have the beautiful majestic Shannon running through the city. We just want to light-up the Three Bridges walk at night-time in a candlelit procession,” she said. “It will be a water festival of light”.

The famous Cleeve’s chimney will also be lit up for the event.

Cllr Maria Donoghue added: “It’s something we can all do - whether you walk, swim, kayak or paddle!”

All are welcome to attend on the night.
