Calls to remove recycling site from Limerick shopping centre to combat illegal dumping

A LOCAL representative has called for a recycle centre to be moved – to prevent the southside of Limerick city being used as a “dumping ground”.
Councillor Sarah Kiely, who is based in Janesboro, was speaking after the Galvone Industrial Estate and its surrounds was deemed by Irish Business Against Litter (Ibal) to be only ‘moderately littered’.
This is an improvement from the time when the area was deemed to be a ‘litter blackspot' by the inspectors from An Taisce.
Despite the improvement, the Fine Gael councillor said the recycling area at Roxboro Shopping Centre continues to be a major problem.
“The recycling area at Roxboro is always a problem. The example I will use is for one of the prosecutions, household rubbish was left at the site. Evidence was found and a notice was issued. The person was from Patrickswell – I know this to be true as I searched the bags and submitted the bank statements I found to the council litter team,” she said.
“This is just one example of how the southside is used as a dumping ground. If the recycling centre is going to be a dumping ground, it should be removed from there and placed in a more public area,” she added.
Limerick City overall, including many parts of the centre, slipped down the twice-yearly Ibal report.
