'Game-changer': Existing plan for car park highlighted by traders in Limerick town

Bruff Town Traders and Community Committee is being established following annoucement of €240k spend on car park
THE MAYOR spending €240k on a small parcel of land in Bruff for a car park has been welcomed by a new committee, but they point to a plan for an existing 60-plus-space car park.
They say the latter development would be a “game changer” for the town.
A statement from the Bruff Town Traders & Community Committee, which was sent to the Leader, reads: “On behalf of the traders, residents, and wider community of the Bruff catchment area, we are deeply disappointed and concerned by what we believe has been a clear lack of meaningful communication, consultation, and transparency regarding decisions that, if implemented in their current form, will have a lasting impact on our town.
“Many people within the community feel excluded from a process that should have involved broader engagement and open discussion. Decisions concerning the future development of Bruff must be made with the interests of all residents, businesses, and community groups in mind, rather than a limited number of stakeholders and representatives.”
They say their concerns have been heightened by the recent proposal to allocate €240,000 towards the development of a new off-street parking facility.
“While we welcome any investment in Bruff and recognise the need for additional parking, the community deserves greater clarity regarding how this project was appraised, selected and progressed, particularly given the ongoing traffic and parking challenges that have affected our town for many years. Questions remain regarding traffic management, road safety, lighting, overall costs, accessibility and the long-term benefits that this proposal will deliver.
“Our concern is not with the provision of additional parking itself, but with the manner in which this proposal has been developed and presented to the people of Bruff without meaningful consultation. Residents and traders have raised legitimate concerns regarding road safety, accessibility and the likely loss or relocation of existing convenient parking spaces. These concerns deserve proper engagement and consideration before any development proceeds.”
The committee say for the past three years, a separate proposal has been under discussion that would deliver a strategically located 60-plus-space town centre car park directly off Main Street.
“This proposal has the potential to provide significantly greater benefits for the community, including electric vehicle charging facilities, campervan services for tourists, community amenities, a Men's Shed facility, green recreational space and a safe location for community events and fundraising activities.
“This proposed development would be a genuine game changer for Bruff. Unlike the current proposal, it has the potential to transform the heart of the town by addressing long-standing parking shortages, improving accessibility, supporting local businesses, attracting visitors and creating opportunities for future economic and community development.
"It would provide a central, strategic parking hub that benefits residents, traders, community groups, tourists and visitors alike. We firmly believe that no other proposal currently under consideration offers the same level of long-term benefit, vision and value for the community,” reads the statement.
It continues: “What many within the community find particularly difficult to understand is why such significant effort has been required to advance a proposal that appears to offer a practical, comprehensive and cost-effective solution to Bruff's needs.
“We are extremely mystified as to why we have had to fight so hard for a project that would come at no cost to Limerick City and County Council or the taxpayer. In our view, this proposal represents a unique opportunity to deliver lasting benefits for everyone who lives, works, trades and invests in Bruff, while creating a focal point for future development and growth within the town.”
The Bruff Town Traders and Community Committee is being established as “a result of these concerns”.
“The committee's purpose is to provide a representative voice for those who live, work and trade in Bruff, while promoting transparency, consultation, accountability and meaningful community engagement on issues affecting the town.
“Our objective is not confrontation but collaboration. We believe the best outcomes for Bruff will be achieved through constructive dialogue, genuine engagement with relevant authorities and ensuring that every section of our community has an opportunity to be heard.”
To date, more than 50 businesses have signed the petition in support of the proposed 60-space town centre car park, “demonstrating the strong appetite that exists within the community for a solution that has the potential to transform Bruff”.
“We believe that a proposal capable of delivering such significant economic, social and community benefits deserves full consideration and open discussion. The people of Bruff deserve transparency, accountability and meaningful consultation.
“We would like to thank everyone who has supported this initiative to date and look forward to continuing to work constructively with public representatives and stakeholders who share our commitment to Bruff's future.
“We extend an open hand to Limerick City and County Council, all elected representatives, local businesses, community organisations and residents to come together in a spirit of openness, positivity and ambition. By working collaboratively, transparently and in the best interests of the entire community, we believe a solution can be delivered that addresses traffic congestion, improves accessibility and supports the long-term economic and social development of our town.”
The statemend concludes by saying Bruff is a vibrant and growing town with enormous potential.
“The aim of our new committee is to help shape that future through a community-led, inclusive and transparent approach that benefits everyone who lives, works and trades here. We want to ensure that Bruff has the infrastructure, facilities and opportunities necessary to support local businesses, attract visitors, enhance community life and create a stronger and more prosperous future for all.
“Our vision is for a Bruff that is represented by the people who live, work, invest and participate in the community every day. Together, through meaningful engagement, consultation, transparency and accountability, we can create a shared vision that reflects the interests of the entire community rather than a select few.
“Together, the Bruff Town Traders and Community Committee believes we can help build a stronger, more inclusive and more prosperous future for Bruff and its people.”
