La Piccola on O’Connell Street in Limerick city closed this summer after almost half-a-century

A FORMER favourite on Limerick’s dining scene for almost 50 years has been purchased in just seven days of being offered for sale.

It was announced at the end of May that La Piccola Italia at 55 O’Connell Street in the city centre was closing. A for sale sign was subsequently erected with an asking price of €150,000.

When the Leader contacted selling agent Tom Crosse, of GVM Auctioneers, he said the sale was agreed within seven days of going to market.

Mr Crosse declined to comment on the buyer or the price achieved.

GVM presented to the market the freehold interest of the former restaurant premises which "traded very successfully at the location for many years”.

“This premises is fully fitted with a commercial kitchen together with seating and tables for in excess of 50 guests. It features independent street access, is in good general condition with tiled floor and the kitchen is well-equipped.

“The property is very much in turnkey condition should one decide to reopen as a restaurant. Otherwise, it could have many alternative uses,” said promotional material.

It is not known if the purchaser plans to open a restaurant.

“Limerick won’t be the same” said one patron after Stefano, and all the team at La Piccola Italia, shared the news of its closure on social media in May.

“After almost 46 wonderful years, the time has come for our family to say goodbye to a very special chapter as we prepare to close our restaurant at the end of this month.

“What began all those years ago with my parents grew into something far greater than we ever could have imagined - a place woven into the heart of Limerick, filled with generations of families, friendships, celebrations, first dates, anniversaries, and unforgettable nights,” read the post.

They said it was an emotional decision but “it feels like the right time”.

"To every customer who walked through our doors, every staff member past and present, every supplier, neighbour and friend who supported us over the years - thank you. Your loyalty and kindness helped make this little restaurant part of Limerick’s story for nearly five decades.”
