A CITY centre design firm has won a major national architecture award.

Healy Partners Architects, located at Glentworth Street, landed the title of architectural project of the year at this year’s Irish Building and Design Award.

The award recognises its work in designing Limerick’s newest riverside landmark, 1BQ.

The building at Bishop’s Quay has become home to Verizon, and 150 staff.

Staff from Healy Partners learnt the news at a ceremony in Dublin’s Intercontinental Hotel.

Technological University of the Shannon was also honoured at the same ceremony, for its campus at Coonagh on the city’s northside.

The campus, which opened to students last year, won the title of sustainable building of the year, and educational project of the year at the prestigious event.

Kirkland Investments, which developed 1BQ said it is “thoroughly impressed” with the design from Healy Partners.

The team there was led by Elaine Bowe.

“The design approach addressed our requirements, seamlessly integrating modern office space, historic buildings and a high-quality residential building. The innovative design of the office building maximises natural light and offers flexible layouts for prospective tenants. The apartments are designed to offer spacious, well-lit living spaces that attract a wide range of tenants,” a spokesperson for Kirkland commented.

Kirkland is controlled by Rudi Butler, a son of the prominent former city developer Robert Butler

Construction of the building took almost two years.
