Community wardens are set to appear on the streets of Limerick this side of Christmas
COMMUNITY safety wardens to provide "feet on the street" are set to be deployed in the city centre this side of Christmas.
The news was confirmed by metropolitan district leader, Cllr Daniel Butler and at this Wednesday's community strategic policy committee.
The new initiative is being put in place in a bid to address anti-social behaviour on the streets.
These community wardens would have a direct line to designated garda officers.

Cllr Butler said he expects the wardens to be on the beat from next week.
"Their presence will provide additional support and reassurance to members of the public, local businesses, and visitors during what is traditionally one of the busiest periods of the year. Three of the new community warden positions have been funded through Government support as it is a government initiative while a fourth position is being financed through the mayoral fund aiming to enhance safety and community wellbeing in the city," added the Fine Gael councillor.
"The introduction of these wardens demonstrates our commitment to making sure that Limerick remains a safe, enjoyable and inclusive place for everyone at this important time of year," he also said.
Council has stressed these wardens will not replace front-line gardai - but it's hoped they will provide increased vibrancy to the city centre and a curb to anti-social behaviour.
