Scottish U17 & Senior Athletics Championships

GRAMGEMOUTH Stadium, Falkirk was the venue for the 2025 Scottish U17 and Senior athletics Championships.

Spectators were treated to a feast of athletics with Olympic 100m hurdles silver medalist Samba Mayela, of France, being the star attraction. Athletics Ireland sent a team of Ireland’s upcoming juvenile stars for the U17 events.

Emer Purtill, of Dooneen AC, representing Ireland confirmed her position as one of the best juvenile field athletes in Ireland and Great Britain by taking double gold in Javelin and Shot.

Talented jumper Áine Frawley of St Mary’s AC also representing Ireland was just outside the medals in the U17 long jump, but is certainly another name for the future.

Laura Frawley, sister of Áine, and now competing for Nenagh Olympic, was in action in the Senior Championships, taking Gold in the High Jump clearing 1.63m.

Cairn Community Games

Well done to all Limerick Athletes who took part in the Cairn National Community Games finals in Carlow, many of whom won medals.

Jerry Kiernan Listowel 5k

The inaugural Jerry Kiernan 5k was held in Listowel on Sunday afternoon. In hot conditions, a large a number of West Limerick athletes took part. 

Karl Lenihan was fifth overall and first M40 in a time of 16.17 with Dooneen’s Oisin Bates ninth in 16:35. Other Limerick athletes who followed were John Fitzgerald 17.03, Jonathan Scanlon 23.03, Theresa Hughes 24.29, Mo Foley 27.38, Alan Quaid 27.51 and Carmel Mac Domhnaill 28.23.

Boston Scientific Clonmel Half Marathon 

Noel Fitzgerald, of West Limerick AC, finished in a superb time of 1:29:11.

Kildare and Longford

Congratulations to West Limerick’s Ide Nic Domhnaill who won the Celbridge 5K in a time of 15:52.

Back to Boston’ Club member Barry McEvoy was second in the Longford Marathon in a time of 2:38 which qualifies him for the 2026 Boston Marathon. Well done.

Tullamore

Paddy Phylan, granduncle of Karen Raine, won the N.A.C.A Leinster Mile flat Championship for Tullamore Harriers in Tullamore.

1987: Limerick native Brendan Kennedy ran the London Marathon 3:30, also in the colours of Tullamore.

Parkrun

Conor Reale (17:17) and Michelle Brennan (21:46) were first finishers at UL. Santiago Diaz (19:54)and Gabriella O’Neill (23:05) were best in Mungret while Cian O’Donovan (20:54) and Rose Brint (26:02) were tops in Newcastle West.

Fixtures

The Na Piarsaigh GAA 5K Walk and Fun Run plus 10K Road Race takes place on Sunday, September 21 at 11am, from Na Piarsaigh GAA grounds, enter through Eventmaster.

The Community Games National Finals take place next weekend in Carlow.

The Metis Ireland Run for Clionas 5K Fun Run takes place on Thursday, September 11 at 6:30pm from the Clayton Hotel Steamboat Quay. Metis is a charity which provides support to families of seriously ill children so please do support. Enter on-line through Eventmaster.

The Limerick County Senior Cross Country and Juvenile Even Age Cross Country Championships take place on Sunday,  September 28 at the Newcastle West Showgrounds.

The Charleville Half Marathon on September 14 is focal point for a lot of Limerick athletes at present.

The Limerick Mini Marathon takes place on Sunday, October 5 at UL, now open to Men and Women, 5K or 10K, enter through Eventmaster.
