A host of Limerick athletes have excelled at events both at home and abroad

Limerick Athletics - Weekly News Update

A group of West Limerick AC athletes who took part in the Munster 4 Mile event in Dungarvan, Co Waterford

World Record

CARMEL MacDomhnaill was part of the women's 4 x 400m team which has set a new World Record in the W70 Category reently.

Brigid McCabe, Eileen O'Brien, Carmel MacDomhnaill and Mags Glavey ran 6:29:93 to set the record.

This follows Carmel's recent involvement in the 4 x 800m World Record.

Munster U12-U14 Indoor Championships

Cars and buses would have been heavy on the way home from Nenagh as Limerick athletes annexed a huge medal haul in the Premier County last Sunday. Very well done to all.

60m Sprints

There was a win for Gabriellea O’Neil (Limerick AC) at U13 (8.59), Silver for Peter Szabo (West Limerick) at U12 in 8.82 secs while Alanna O’Connell was 3 rd for Limerick AC at U14 (8.39)

60m Hurdles

U12: Keeva Loughlin of Limerick AC took first in 10.97 secs with Conor Oliver making it a club double as he won the Boys event in 10.95 secs.

U13: There was a Limerick 1-2-3 in the Boys event with Patrick Keogh taking gold for Limerick AC in 10.27 followed by Dooneen’s Bobby Weekes on 10.89 secs. Charlie Smith ensured that Kilmallock featured on the Medal table taking third place in 10.98 secs.

In the ‘Girls’ Limerick AC secured a 1-2 finish, with Aoife Halley taking gold in 10.56, followed in second by Elaine Considine in 10.74

U14: Leroy Cremin (West Limerick) and 2nd Sarah Tobin (Limerick AC) were second in their respective events.

Middle Distance: In the Boys U13 600m Tom Keogh took victory for Limerick AC stopping the clock on 1:39.89. At U12 Elisa Fahy was second for West Limerick 1:54.01. Eva McMahon was second for Dooneen in the U14 800m on 2:26.80.

3000m

Aimee McMahon won the U20 3000m for Dooneen in 10:57.59 while Sarah Butler, of Emerald AC, was second in the U23 event in 10:33.59.

Relays

Limerick AC took Gold in the Boys U13 4x200m through Jack Ryan, Tom Keogh, Patrick Keogh & Joshua Bowen. Their U14’s were not to be outdone, also taking victory through Killian Coman, Rian Kiely Keoghan, Oisin McGuinness & Tadgh Reen.

Dooneen were third in the Girls U14 4x200m relay through Aoibheann Hennigar, Cara Guinan, Faye Cusack and Isobelle Crowley.

Walks

Dooneen’s Caitlin Garvey continues to shine as she won the Girls U14 1000m walk by two seconds on 6:00.22.

Shot Put

Congratulations to Dooneen’s Lavr Malejevs who not just won the Boys U14 Shout Put but obliterated the 2009 shot putt record set by Colin Kingston at 13.28 when he threw a stunning distance of 15.27m in his penultimate round. His sister Chelsea made it a double for the family, winning the Girls U13 in 9.12m.

Munster 4 Mile Road Race Championships
Hosted by West Waterford AC in Dungarvan Co. Waterford Bilboa’s Declan Moore contended before finishing third in a very close finish in a time of 19:38, just one second off second place and 10 seconds behind the winner.

It was still an excellent performance, well done to Declan, West Limerick were the sixth place Senior Club and the fifth Novice ‘team’. Their best finishers included 199th Niall O'Callaghan 20:53, 30th Pádraig Ó Donnell 21:48, 34th Karl Lenihan 21:59
(3rd O45), 69th Colum McCarthy 24:18, 106th Kevin O'Donoghue 27:29. Limerick was the fourth Senior County team.

Around the Country

Kinvara Half Marathon

Niall O'Riordan of An Bru was fifth overall in a time of 1:15:10 with West Limerick’s Kate Murray home in a PB time of 1:40:44.

Karol Downey completed the Blarney Half Marathon on Sunday in a super time of 1:24:21, setting a new PB. Karol recently received the West Limerick AC annual award for mostimproved club athlete in 2024 and he doesn't show any signs of stopping!

Lusk 4 Mile

Following her national 3000m silver medal last weekend, Íde NicDhomhnaill was on the podium again on Sunday at the Lusk 4 Mile, taking 2nd female in a time of 20:43. Well done Íde.

Abroad

The first of the seasons ‘Marathon Majors’ took place in Tokyo where West Limerick’s Orla Cusack finished in a time of 4:05 in hot conditions. Well done also to Dooneen’s Mike
Griffin who was also a finisher.

Training Tip

"Try to get some recovery food as soon as possible after every intense or long training session. Some fast acting carbohydrates and protein powder, along with water and electrolytes (if conditions are warm) will tick all of the boxes" - Mike Carmody

Schools

The Irish Schools Cross Country Championships National Finals take place next Saturday in Ballybrit Racecourse in Galway City with Limerick Athletes hoping the bring medals home with them on the M18 motorway. Some will also be hoping for selection for the Irish Schools Team for the SIAB International in Falkirk on March 25.

The Michael Rejmer 10 Mile, hosted by Dooneen AC, takes place Sunday, April 13 th at 11:00am from Limerick Racecourse. Entries via Eventmaster (€20, or €15 per person for the new 2x5 mile relay).

The Limerick County 4 Mile Road Championship takes place on Sunday, March 16, in Kilmallock. Enter through Justraceevents.com

The Inaugural Limerick Half Marathon takes place on Sunday, August 3, 9:00am at TUS, Old Cratloe Road. Part of the Run Limerick Series. Entries available via Eventmaster.
