Limerick period home up for auction by instruction of High Court

Former owners were related to the Irish revolutionary, James Napper Tandy

A PERIOD residence and 36 acres in Boher will go under the virtual hammer later this month on the instructions of the Examiner of the High Court.

Bohergar House is for sale by online auction on Thursday, September 26 from 10am to noon. The sale of the property and land to the top bidder on the day is subject to the client's confirmation and whether it meets an undisclosed reserve price.

It is the latest chapter in Bohergar’s storied history. It was originally owned by the Wilkinson family in the early to mid 19th century. They were related to the famous James Napper Tandy, an Irish revolutionary and a founder of the United Irishmen.

Bohergar was purchased by James Humphrys in 1856 for £900 from George Wilkinson. It stayed in the Humphry family for over a century. Bohergar House was sold out of the family and the most recent owner is not a Humphry.

The High Court appointed selling agents are DNG Country Homes & Estates (exclusive Irish affiliate of Hamptons International) and DNG Cusack Dunne.

Mark Cusack, of DNG Cusack Dunne, said the sale of Bohergar House and lands represents an excellent opportunity to acquire a sizeable holding comprising a four bedroom period house, featuring a walled courtyard complete with stable building and separate guest/staff accommodation, farm yard with separate access and 36 acres of land.

Whilst requiring refurbishment, he said the very best of everything went into Bohergar House, and the outbuildings offer plenty of potential.

Built in the 1930s to replace the original Bohergar House, Mr Cusack said it is an imposing period house, full of character and boasting many period features including granite sills and door surrounds, elaborate wrought iron balustrade, wooden panelling, coving and cornicing, antique marble fire surrounds and stained glass rooflights to name but a few.

A tarmacadam tennis court is also in need of refurbishment but, like the house, it just awaits some TLC from the new owner.

The Leader contacted Mr Cusack just a day after Bohergar House went online but already his phone was hopping.

“We only went live yesterday but already there is strong interest. It is mostly local interest from the farming and business community  but there was one gentleman who said he’d fly in from Germany to look at it. It is also listed with Hamptons in London so it might open doors in the UK,” said Mr Cusack.

The main house at Bohergar is a substantial period residence, extending to c. 2900 sq ft/ 269 sq m of accommodation, laid out over two floors and comprising and impressive entrance hall, three sizeable reception rooms, a farmhouse style kitchen, a pantry /scullery and four bedrooms, three of which are ensuite, plus the main bathroom.

Several outbuildings form the courtyard located to the rear of the house which is accessed through a cut stone arch with weathervane atop. The walled stable yard comprises several outbuildings including six stables, three storehouses, a large workshop and a two bedroom house.

There is huge potential for Bohergar House which sits astride 36 acres of rolling parkland.
