Late Limerick songwriter to be commemorated with event at childhood home

The Limerick Musical History Group has announced it will host a free public tribute to the late Limerick songwriter Johnny Duhan in celebration of Culture Night.

The event will be held at the songwriter's childhood home on Wolfe Tone Street on Friday, September 18, at 7pm.

Best known for writing 'The Voyage', the late Johnny will be honored with the unveiling of a commemorative plaque at his childhood home.

The free event is open to all and will bring together musicians, artists and community members to celebrate his life, songs and Limerick roots.

Duhan began his career as frontman of Granny’s Intentions - one of Limerick's most successful rock groups of the 1960's - before becoming one of Ireland’s most respected songwriters.

Johnny’s songs were recorded by Christy Moore, Mary Black, Dolores Keane, The Dubliners, and Mary Coughlan, before his sudden passing in November 2024.

The Culture Night gathering will bring his music home to the Limerick street where his remarkable journey began.

Organised by the Limerick Musical History Group, the event will feature Mick Hanly performing Johnny's remarkable hits.

The jam-packed line-up will also see performances from Kevin Sheehy, Mickey Dunne, Mickey Mac DJ, Charlie's Angels, The Blue Rabbit Guitar Club, John O’Reagan, and poet Kieran Beville.

An art auction of portraits and works related to the late Johnny Duhan will also take place on the night, with proceeds funding the evening.

Works have been kindly donated by Clare Hartigan, Kieran Beville, Joyce Shee, Frank Hoban, Sean Lennon, Frank Boucher, Cathy O’Donavan, John (Tulla) O’Mahoney, and his daughter Rosie O’Mahoney.

The event is supported by PBC Builders.
