LIMERICK-BASED drama group, the Torch Players, celebrated the launch of their second production of 2026.
A Trio of One-Act Plays - being performed from October 1 to October 3 at the Coach House - will mark the end of the organisation’s 50th anniversary.
Speaking at the launch, founder and chief of the Torch Players, Maurice O’Sullivan, spoke about the significance of the 50th anniversary, saying “even Covid didn’t keep us down”.
“Many of our cast and crew won major awards at Drama Festivals throughout the country, including myself, as our resident director, who won over 40 best director awards,” Maurice said.
Despite being almost 85 years old, Maurice says he's not ready to retire “just yet!”
The founder is directing The Three Rogues of Munster - one of the plays set to be performed as part of the Trio of One-Act Plays - after directing the original productions in 1975 and 1979.
“This play was produced in 1975 by Cumann Dramaiochta, Scoil Na Trachtala, Mulgrave Street and went on to win first prize at the Feile Naisiunta Scoildramaiochta in Dublin.
“It was subsequently performed in English by Torch Players in 1979 with the same cast and crew, came third at the All-Ireland One Act Finals in Naas and won the Limerick Post Primary Drama Competition sponsored by Junior Chamber Limerick,” Maurice explained.
Brian Kelly - who starred in the original 1975 and 1979 prouductions - will star in the lead role of this year’s interpretation.
