A LIMERICK player who won an €11.1m Lotto jackpot has made contact with the National Lottery and preparations are now underway to pay-over the mega prize.
The winning Quick Pick ticket was sold in Foynes, County Limerick on Wednesday - the day of the draw.
Kelly’s Costcutter at Main Street in Foynes was the retailer which sold the all-important ticket and this Friday morning, the shop held a celebratory event to mark the momentous occasion.
The shop is run locally by Trisha and Eoin Kelly, a sibling duo from the town.
Trisha said: “It has been so exciting here with everyone, the buzz around here this morning since everybody found out is unbelievable. It’s the beginning of the New Year, it can be a depressing time, but it is brilliant to see something like this for this town.”
The winner of the huge jackpot has remained anonymous to the public, but locals in Foynes are speculating as to who the lucky individual may be: “I’m assuming it’s a local person. But a lot of people stop as they’re passing through - so who knows!” said Mary O’Shaughnessy, a nearby shopper from Shanangolden.
Fran Whearty, a National Lottery representative, told Limerick Live that the jackpot winner is likely to be in “a lot of shock at the moment.”
He said: “I can confirm that it is a winning ticket and we have asked that ticket holder to get some legal and financial advice, because they are going to need that before collecting their prize.”
This is the second time that Kelly’s Costcutter in Foynes has sold a winning Lotto ticket, the first being a €9.6million jackpot - back in 2006.
Trisha said: “We feel like lightning shouldn’t have struck twice, but here it did. We’re delighted - the previous winner did a lot of good with the money that he won and was a bit of a hero here around the area, so hopefully whoever won this time around will be equally as kind and generous as winners to the locality.”
The Limerick ticket holder has become the 19th lotto millionaire in Ireland over the past 12 months.
