STAFF of an indoor market in Limerick city centre are celebrating after winning a Tidy Towns award.
Wickham Way market, which is located in a former goods yard fronting both Wickham Street and Lower Gerald Griffin Street in the city centre, has won the overall Limerick City Tidy Towns award for 2022.
Since 2014, volunteers with the group have on a monthly basis awarded Limerick business owners who keep their premises in tip-top condition.
In July 2022, Wickham Way won a monthly award, with Tidy Towns praising its "vibrant exterior paintwork and signage" and noting that it's "a hub for the sale of vintage clothing, handmade art and crafts, locally produced goods and produce, and a host of many community gatherings."
Now, at a special ceremony this Wednesday evening, Dave Ryan, the market's general manager picked up the award, after the firm beat off competition from 11 other businesses.
It came after an online public vote.
Speaking to Limerick Live at the awards ceremony, which took place in Flannery's Bar at Shannon Street in the city, David admitted he was surprised to win the overall prize, which included a cut-glass trophy.
"I wasn't expecting it at all. Tidy Towns do great work, so I was coming to support them anyway. It was great evening winning the monthly nomination last year. I wasn't expecting to win the overall award."
Asked what made Wickham Way stand out in the vote, David said: "I would say it's the community up there. The vendors themselves make it. Everyone who goes up there has their own support and backing, and I think that all came together."
Limerick City Tidy Towns will continue to honour business owners who keep their premises looking good all year around.
Already this year, two businesses have been recognised as the awards switch to being once every other month.
They were Rift Coffee in Mallow Street and popular bar Dolan's based at Dock Road.
