WATCH: John Kiely reacts after epic Munster final win

Limerick regained the Mick Mackey Cup after a frantic finale in SuperValu Páirc Uí Chaoimh

LIMERICK manager John Kiely described the Munster Senior Hurling Final as a “titanic battle”, speaking to the media after Limerick’s nail-biting win over Cork.

“We didn’t expect anything else,” he said, adding: “No matter how much you prepare yourself it’s not until you’re in the middle of it you know you’re in a real battle.”

Limerick regained the title, beating the Rebels in their own backyard with a final result of 1-21 to Cork’s 2-17. Kiely dubbed the match “a proper Munster final”.

A seventh provincial crown under Kiely’s management means that the team will enter the All-Ireland series at the semi-final stage.

“The support was just incredible,” said Kiely after the game. “Right when we needed it as well in those final minutes towards the end, they were fantastic, they’re great.”

He noted the cost of being a supporter, saying: “It’s not easy - it’s 50 quid a ticket and it’s hard to get the family tickets. It is expensive.”

He continued: “It’s a massive commitment by a supporter to follow your team every day and it means a big deal to us that they invest so much to follow this group of players.”

Limerick’s next challenge awaits in Croke Park on the first weekend of July, with Clare or Dublin the probable opponents.
