AS THEY ended a 75-year drought to finally reclaim the Sam Maguire Cup, Mayo claimed All-Ireland Senior Football Championship glory backboned by players with Limerick connections.

Captain Jack Coyne previously lined out for the University of Limerick in the Sigerson Cup, being named on the 'Rising Star' team of the year in 2023.

Darragh Beirne - as current UL student - said after the game that the Connacht side took inspiration from the style of play seen from the Limerick hurlers at Croke Park seven days earlier.

The victorious 2026 UL Sigerson Cup was one littered with Mayo talent, with the likes of Castlebar Mitchell’s Sean Morohan, Ballina’s Frank Irwin, Westport’s Conal Dawson, Davitt’s Jack Melvin and Cathal Corless, Moy Davitt’s Dylan O’Brien and Colm McHale and Crossmolina’s Diarmuid Coggins all in the squad as is Cian McHale.

James Carr, Eoin McGreal and Ryan O'Donohue have also represented the college.

And midfielder Bob Touhy's family have strong connections with Ahane GAA club.
