Limerick hurling star Gearóid Hegarty is set to marry his long-time partner Niamh McCarthy next week

ST PATRICK’S GAA club honoured one of their own on Thursday night with star player Gearóid Hegarty receiving a touching gift ahead of his upcoming nuptials.

The six-time All-Ireland winner, and favourite to win Hurler of the Year, after an outstanding season is set to marry long-time partner Niamh McCarthy in the coming days.

Hegarty signed off on club duties on Thursday evening when St Patrick’s faced Caherline in the Woodlands House Hotel and Spa Limerick Premier Junior A Hurling Championship before jetting off to the Algarve for the ceremony this weekend.

St Patrick’s chairman Tom Downes presented the Limerick star with a commemorative gift following their loss to Caherline in Claughaun to mark the upcoming wedding. Gearóid marries Niamh, a former Limerick footballer and teacher, in the Algarve next week.

Hegarty is firm favourite to win the prestigious Hurler of the Year award after some stunning performances during Limerick’s All-Ireland run.

He was awarded Man of the Match in the semi-final win over Clare and also played a key role in Limerick’s win over Galway in the decider.

Hegarty was awarded the Player of the Month gong for July earlier this week and is in line to win a fifth All-Star later this year.

The St Patrick’s clubman has won the Hurler of the Year award once before in 2020. He picked up that award after Limerick’s win on the Covid affected All-Ireland where John Kiely’s men defeated Waterford on December 13.
